Common questions
- What is an MBS item number?
- It’s the number for one service Medicare pays a benefit for, such as 23 for a GP consultation in the rooms of at least 6 minutes and under 20. Every service in the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) has its own item number, listed with its description, its schedule fee, and its Medicare benefit. GN.1.1 Item 23
- How do I find the right MBS item number?
- Search for the service on MBS Online, the Australian Government’s MBS website, or find it in the lists on this page. For a consult, paste your notes into MBS Desk, with no patient details, and it shows the items they fit and the MBS source for each. MBS Online search
- What is the schedule fee?
- The fee set for each item in the MBS. Medicare’s benefit is worked out from it, and the benefit is never more than the fee the doctor charges. Doctors are free to set their own fees. GN.10.26 GN.1.3
- How much does Medicare pay for an item?
- For a GP’s consultation outside hospital, 100% of the schedule fee, and the same for a practice nurse’s service on a GP’s behalf. For most other services outside hospital, 85%. For a service in hospital as a private patient, 75%. Each item’s page here shows its fee and its benefit. GN.10.26
- How often does the MBS change?
- The MBS is updated through the year, and each update starts on a set date. Every page here says which MBS it follows and the day it was last checked against MBS Online. MBS Online downloads
