MBS Desk
New consult

Disclaimer

MBS Desk helps Australian health professionals work out which Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items may apply to a consult. Please read this before relying on anything on MBS Desk, including the tool, our blog, and our guides. Our Terms of Use apply too.

1. Information, not advice

Everything on MBS Desk is general information. It isn’t billing, coding, compliance, legal, financial, tax, or clinical advice, and it doesn’t take your circumstances into account.

2. The claim is yours

You decide what to claim, and you’re responsible for every claim made for your services. Before you bill, check each item against the current MBS on MBS Online, including its explanatory notes. If you’re unsure how an item applies, ask AskMBS (askMBS@health.gov.au) or a qualified adviser.

3. Check every result

MBS Desk’s results come from automated systems, including AI, working from what you enter and our copy of the MBS. They can be incomplete, out of date, or wrong, and they can’t take account of what MBS Desk doesn’t know, such as a patient’s claims history. We don’t guarantee any result.

4. Fees are a guide

Fees shown are MBS schedule fees and benefits from the latest MBS release we hold. What’s actually paid depends on the patient, how the service is billed, safety nets, incentives, and other factors.

5. Keeping up with the MBS

The MBS changes often. We update MBS Desk from official releases, but there can be a delay, and blog posts and guides reflect the MBS when they were written. The official MBS and the law always prevail.

6. Not for clinical decisions

MBS Desk is for billing and claims administration only. It isn’t intended to diagnose, screen for, prevent, monitor, or treat anything, or to recommend any treatment, and it doesn’t replace your clinical judgement. When it says a patient may be eligible for a service, that’s about what the MBS allows, not a sign that the patient needs it.

7. Not a government service

MBS Desk is independent. It isn’t affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting for Services Australia, Medicare, the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, the Professional Services Review, or any other government body.

8. MBS material

MBS Desk uses material from the Medicare Benefits Schedule, published by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, © Commonwealth of Australia. We’ve summarised and rearranged some of it, and the Commonwealth doesn’t endorse MBS Desk. The official MBS is on MBS Online.

10. Our liability

To the extent the law allows, and subject to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, we aren’t liable for any loss that comes from using or relying on MBS Desk, including any audit, repayment, penalty, or missed income. Our Terms of Use set out the full limits on our liability, and your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
